Historic Church Sets Fire in France, Sacristy Destroyed (Videos & Photos Inside)

Lord have mercy!

The Church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul in Lille, France set ablaze on May 3. The disaster required at least 60 firefighters to control. The cause and origin is unknown and under investigation.

The 19th-century neo-Romanesque-style brick church located in the Wazemmes district of Lille set fire around 8 p.m. local time. The incident began in the sacristy and destroyed it.

However, firefighters quickly responded to the disaster, preventing damage to the entire church.

Lille mayor Martine Aubry thanked firefighters for helping preserve the recently renovated church.

The mayor’s May 3 post reads, “This evening the Lille Saint Pierre Saint Paul of Wazemmes church is affected by a fire. Thanks to the [fire department] which is currently struggling to prevent the spread of flames in this religious and historical heritage, whose frame has been recently renovated.”
