This is so moving! 😭

Saturday Night Live began the Feb. 26 show with a cold opening of the Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York singing “A Prayer for Ukraine.” The show normally opens with a skit.

Cast members Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong introduced the choir.

The patriotic hymn dates back to the late 19th century, pleading to God for blessings, freedom, and protection.

Here’s one English translation:

“Lord, oh the Great and Almighty,

Protect our beloved Ukraine,

Bless her with freedom and light

Of your holy rays.

With learning and knowledge enlighten

Us, your children small,

In love pure and everlasting

Let us, oh Lord, grow.

We pray, oh Lord Almighty,

Protect our beloved Ukraine,

Grant our people and country

All your kindness and grace.

Bless us with freedom, bless us with wisdom,

Guide [us] into [a] kind world,

Bless us, oh Lord, with good fortune

For ever and evermore.”

Here’s how some people reacted to the video:

One YouTube user said, “This was the WARMEST ‘Cold Open’ I’ve ever seen from SNL. Such a simple and moving way to honor the sacrifices the Ukrainian people are forced to make.”
