The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See placed a rainbow flag across its building in celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
The embassy’s social media accounts expressed their support, despite Catholic Church teaching on homosexuality. Most importantly, the Church honors the Sacred Heart of Jesus throughout the month of June.

The Catholic Church teaches that people with homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” but that homosexual acts constitute “grave depravity,” are “intrinsically disordered,” and that “under no circumstances can they be approved.” Instead, “homosexual persons are called to chastity.” (CCC 2357-2359)
Many comments on Facebook and Twitter criticized the embassy, especially for their blatant disregard for Church teaching, as well as the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Along with a painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this Twitter user wrote, “Pride is a mortal sin. Here you go.”

Facebook user Claudia Sommers wrote, “It does the U.S., in its official capacity, no good whatsoever to ‘respect’ all the world’s identities of choice when it shows such profound disrespect to the essential nature and beliefs of the host state wherein America has planted an embassy.
“This is like hanging up a ham at the front of the embassy in Jerusalem. Whoever permitted this lame-brained and utterly unnecessary poke in the eye of the Catholic Church should be ashamed of themselves — and unemployed.”
