Pope Francis sent a sleeping St. Joseph statue to the Basilica of San José de Flores, the church where he decided to become a priest in his youth.

On the occasion of ten years of his pontificate, the Holy Father wanted to celebrate this anniversary closely with his first parish community.

The Pope sent a sleeping Saint Joseph statue to the church where he decided to become a priest

The Basilica of San José de Flores is located in the neighborhood of Flores, in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. On Saturday March 18, dozens of faithful organized a procession with the Sleeping Saint Joseph statue the Supreme Pontiff presented.

The pilgrimage started from the church where Pope Francis received his first communion, confirmation and celebrated his first Mass, the Chapel of the Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia.

From there, the parishioners carried the statue through the streets to the Basilica of San José de Flores, the place where Pope Francis decided his priestly vocation .

Along with the image, Pope Francis sent a letter to the basilica that read:

“Saint Joseph always protects us with his paternal help. I hope that in this [statue] you can leave all your intentions, with the confidence of knowing that you can do everything close to Jesus and Mary and that his goodness equals his power. I have no doubt that in his dreams, he takes care of presenting them to God.

“Please don’t stop praying for me. May Jesus bless you, the Holy Virgin take care of you, and Saint Joseph protect you.”

On several occasions the Holy Father commented why he is especially close to this devotion:

During a Jan. 16, 2015 address in the Philippines, Pope Francis said, “I really like St. Joseph. He is a strong man of silence.  I have a picture of St. Joseph sleeping on my desk. Even when he sleeps, he takes care of the Church. Yeah! We know he can do that.”

“So, when I have a problem, a difficulty, I write a little note and put it under Saint Joseph, so you can dream about it! In other words, I say to him: Pray for this problem!“

Sleeping Saint Joseph, pray for us!
