Our Lady of Guadalupe, revered as the Empress of the Americas, is a beloved Marian devotion and occupies a central place in Mexico’s religious and cultural identity.

Since her apparitions to Saint Juan Diego in 1531, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has been a source of comfort, hope, and faith for millions.

Over the centuries, countless accounts of miraculous intercessions have been attributed to her, transforming lives and shaping key moments in the history of the Mexican people.

Here are some of the most remarkable miracles within the Guadalupan tradition:

1) The Tilma of Juan Diego

The tilma of Saint Juan Diego—the simple cloak on which the image of the Virgin Mary miraculously appeared—has remarkably resisted natural deterioration for centuries, defying the laws of physics and chemistry. Scientists have studied it extensively, yet its preservation remains inexplicable. Today, the tilma continues to inspire awe and devotion and is venerated in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

2) The Healing of Juan Bernardino

One of the earliest miracles attributed to the Virgin was the miraculous healing of Juan Bernardino, Saint Juan Diego’s uncle, on December 12, 1531. Gravely ill, Juan Bernardino recovered unexpectedly through the Virgin’s intercession. He later testified that Mary appeared to him and requested to be known as “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” a name that has endured for centuries.

3) The Conversion of the Aztecs

Our Lady of Guadalupe played a pivotal role in the conversion of the Aztecs to Christianity. Within seven years of her apparition at Tepeyac, nine million indigenous people embraced the Catholic faith. For Spanish missionaries, who had struggled with evangelization amidst past injustices and the moral contradictions of conquest, this was a profound source of hope. The Virgin’s presence validated their efforts and offered divine support in a challenging mission.

4) Protection During the War of Independence

During Mexico’s War of Independence, insurgent forces invoked Our Lady of Guadalupe as their protector. Numerous accounts describe miraculous interventions that allowed Mexican troops to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles, further cementing the Virgin’s connection to the destiny of Mexico.

5) Physical Healings Attributed to Her Intercession

Thousands of pilgrims journey to the Basilica of Guadalupe each year, seeking healing for serious or incurable illnesses. Reports of miraculous recoveries, sudden symptom relief, and unexpected improvements abound. These experiences, preserved in votive offerings, testimonies, and oral tradition, form a vital part of Guadalupan devotion.

6) Protection for migrants and families in times of crisis

Today, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a guide and protector of migrants, separated families, and people facing economic and social hardship. Countless stories recount how her image accompanies those crossing borders, or how her intercession brings safety, job opportunities, and family reunification. These are everyday miracles that Our Lady continues to perform, day after day, for her children.

7) A Powerful Advocate in Dangerous Situations

Our Lady of Guadalupe is also a source of protection in accidents, fires, and natural disasters. Many testimonies tell of lives saved through the presence of a rosary, holy card, or prayer offered to the Virgin, demonstrating her enduring role as a compassionate intercessor.

As Pope Francis beautifully said:

“[Mary] walked to Tepeyac to accompany Juan Diego and continues to travel the continent when, through an image or print, a candle or a medal, a Rosary or a Hail Mary, she enters a house, a prison, a hospital room, a nursing home, a school, a rehabilitation clinic to say: 'Am I not here, I who am your Mother?'”

Through centuries of devotion, miracles, and intercession, Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a beloved mother to millions, a symbol of hope, and a source of enduring faith.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!
