Several popular songs contain messages with a pro-life perspective of the sanctity of unborn life, parenthood, and choosing life despite pressure.
Many other songs focus on the tragic consequences and hurt abortion can bring to the mother, father, and their families.
Here are seven popular songs with powerful pro-life messages:
1) “I Was Gonna Be” – Rachel Holt
Rachel Holt’s “I Was Gonna Be” is an unapologetically pro-life country song sung from the perspective of an unborn baby who was aborted.
The lyrics give the child a voice to describe what she “was gonna” do and be, underlining both the humanity and the lost potential of every aborted child.
Pro-life message in the song
The baby mourns that some people say she is not a “living soul,” but only a mistake. Holt then lists all the joys of human life the baby never experienced: loving, laughing, dancing, and changing the world as a little girl, because her life was ended before birth.
Holt sings the entire song as first-person testimony from the perspective of an unborn child. This unapologetically pro-life ballad describes how abortion takes the life of a human who had a God-given purpose.
2) “Miracle” – Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston’s “Miracle” describes a woman remembering and mourning a lost “miracle.” Many people believe the song is about abortion regret. Houston said in a 1991 interview how the song came about:
“I think about the air we breathe, the earth we live on. I think about our children,” she said. “I think about a lot of things, things God put here for us to have, things that we need and we take for granted. I think all of these things are miracles and I think we should try and take better care of them.”
Pro-life message in the song
Houston’s lyrics say she “didn’t know” what she had until it was gone, and wonders how she could have let her “miracle” go. She does not explicitly mention abortion, but it is evident that she is hurt from the loss of a baby after an abortion.
This song even encouraged a woman to cancel a Planned Parenthood appointment and choose life.
3) “Papa Don’t Preach” – Madonna
Madonna’s 1986 song tells the story of a young pregnant woman whose friends pressure her to “give it up." Despite pressure, however, she insists she is "keeping her baby." She recognizes the responsibility and sacrifice entailed, and assures her father she is doing what is right.
Pro-life message in the song
The woman describes the situation to her father, explaining she is pregnant and she has already decided to keep the baby, despite outside pressure. She also explains that keeping the baby is sacrificial love.
4) “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” – Wham!
“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” is a 1984 song about not wanting to be left behind when a love interest goes for an evening out. Its lyrics do not discuss abortion or pregnancy, but George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley proudly wear “CHOOSE LIFE” T‑shirts.
While the “CHOOSE LIFE” slogan was meant as an anti-suicide, anti-drug, and anti-death/anti-destruction message, the pro-life movement has embraced it over the last several decades.
5) “Unborn Child” – Seals and Crofts
This 1974 song directly speaks to an unborn baby. The artist also begs the mother not to abort. The song presents the child as already present, unique, and worthy of protection, saying that the mother “will never regret it” if she chooses life.
Pro-life moment in the song
The artist begs the mother to “let it be” and says she will not regret choosing life for her baby.
6) “Abortion” – Kid Rock
In Kid Rock’s song, “Abortion,” a man addresses the child he never met because of an abortion. The lyrics express grief and longing, and consider abortion a tragic and haunting loss– one that leaves an irreplaceable absence in the family.
Pro-life message in the song
The singer imagines his child’s siblings and mother and laments that the child cannot see them. He then expresses his desire to share his family’s life with the child, affirming the child’s humanity and value.
7) “Small Bump” – Ed Sheeran
The lyrics to “Small Bump” by Ed Sheeran directly address an unborn baby. Sheeran describes the child’s physical appearance and future as if he or she is already known and loved. Although the song tragically ends in miscarriage, it beautifully describes the true personhood of an unborn child.
Pro-life message in the song
Sheeran sings to the “small bump” as a living child whom he loves and cannot wait to meet. He describes the baby’s appearance and personality and unashamedly affirms life in the womb.
