Could the next pope be the last?
In this episode of The Catholic Talk Show, Ryan Scheel and Ryan Dellacrosse discuss Saint Malachy's prophecy about the last Pope named Petrus Romanus.
These ancient predictions about the final pope have fascinated the faithful for centuries, offering eerie but convincing details about the papacy.
1) Saint Malachy's Cryptic Vision
According to pious tradition, Saint Malachy experienced a vision that detailed every pope who would reign in the Catholic Church, ending with Petrus Romanus.
“He was summoned to Rome by the pope, and upon seeing the Seven Hills, he fell down on his knees and had a vision where he saw all of the popes and then wrote them down into a list of 112 one-line cryptic descriptors in Latin," Scheel says.
2) Saint John Paul II's Life and Eclipses
Some of Saint Malachy’s prophecies seem incredibly accurate, like the one related to Pope Saint John Paul II’s life, described as de labori Solus, or the labor of the sun.
“John Paul II was born during an eclipse, and his funeral happened during an eclipse, so they're saying the sun is laboring, and that's how it is tied to that prediction," Scheel explains.
3) Lost for Centuries and Rediscovered
Just before a papal election, the mysterious document containing Saint Malachy's prophecy was conspicuously rediscovered in the Vatican archives after being lost for centuries.
"He had this vision around the year 1182 when visiting Rome, but the interesting thing is that it wasn't actually ever found until the 1590s. There's no attestation toward it for 400 years essentially," Scheel says.
