Jesus did not call them when they had everything figured out or when their lives were free of worries. He found them in the midst of their studies, jobs, projects, and dreams. These religious sisters share what they did before discovering that God was calling them to something different.
Before putting on the habit and dedicating their lives to God, each had her own story. Some were pursuing a college degree; others were already working in a profession, while still others worked to make ends meet.
The Sisters of the Cross of the Sacred Heart of Jesus shared a video on social media recalling that, before answering God’s call, they were women “with studies, jobs, plans, interests, and very specific dreams.”
“Jesus did not call empty lives or perfect stories. He called real hearts, with journeys, questions, experiences, and everything they had lived through up to that point.”
In the video, several sisters share what they did before saying “yes” to God:
“Before becoming a nun, I was studying social work.
Before becoming a nun, I was an elementary school teacher.
Before becoming a nun, I was an accountant.
Before becoming a nun, I was a shopkeeper.
Before becoming a nun, I was a lawyer.
Before becoming a nun, I worked as a seamstress.
Before becoming a nun, I was an actress and studied theater.
Before becoming a nun, I was a shepherdess; I looked after my dad’s sheep.”
Your Vocation Does Not Erase Your Story
The sisters explain that a vocation does not erase your personal story, but embraces it and transforms it into something you may never have imagined.
“Perhaps you, too, think you need to have your life figured out before considering your vocation. But Jesus often calls right there: in everyday life, in what you study, in what you do, in what you dream of, and in what you do not yet understand.”
The video has surpassed 540,000 views and 57,000 likes, and many users have praised the sisters’ testimonies and their decision to answer God’s call even after embarking on other career paths.
“Congratulations to those who say Yes to the call, even after finding success in the world 🥹🥹🥹.”
“If the world isn’t worse off, it’s thanks to you, who sustain us with your prayers 😍.”
“All of them are such lovely, intelligent women who said yes to God’s call.”
