“I have a fun story about Mother Teresa!” began the grinning Fr. David Mary, Minister General of the Franciscan Friars Minor, standing near St. Peter’s Square in Rome the day before the canonization of Mother Teresa.
“Many years ago when I was visiting with her in the sacristy and we were talking, just her and I alone for about 45 minutes, and I had to go, and I said, ‘Mother, I gotta go, I’m so late for seminary, I gotta go now.’
“She said, ‘It’s okay, God bless.’ She gave me Miraculous Medals and holy cards.”
That’s when things almost went terribly wrong.
“I grabbed my book bag and I pulled it, and she was standing on the straps of my book bag. And as she went flying backwards I dove to the ground and caught her!”
Thank goodness he had such fast reflexes!
“So I said, ‘I”m so sorry, Mother, I’m so sorry.’ She says, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay, God bless you.’
“And I’m driving to seminary thinking to myself, ‘Brother David kills Mother Teresa! Film at 11!'” Fr. David explained with a laugh.
“And so one of the joys of my life I guess was tripping Mother Teresa, but then catching her, and so she didn’t get hurt and all went well.”
Here’s the video of Fr. David Mary, FFM telling the funny story:
