Could Justin Bieber’s 2026 Coachella performance be a hidden lesson in healing through Christ?

Father Mark-Mary Ames of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal believes this could be the case if you observe the situation from a Christian perspective.

In a recent reaction video published by Ascension Presents, the Franciscan priest reflected on “Bieberchella,” Justin Bieber’s recent viral performance at Coachella 2026 that had the internet raving.

Bieber headlined the California music and arts festival on April 11 and 18, 2026. Part of his performance consisted of throwback videos from his childhood. He observed his younger self as he performed his hit songs from the last several years.

In Father Mark-Mary’s video, he says,

“There's this beautiful moment where he kind of turns his back on the whole crowd, and he's looking at the big projector, and he's looking at himself, and he's singing.”

Father Mark-Mary says that while he does not know “what really happened for Justin” in these moments, the idea of observing his own youthfulness and innocence could inspire and encourage us to “make this similar journey of looking back at our younger selves,” moving us to “compassion, healing, and forgiveness.”

As Catholics, he invites viewers “to do this with Jesus—to allow Him to kind of visit with us, our younger self, and then allowing that same sort of loving gaze, the same heart, to be with us and to look upon us and to love us today.”

“Bieberchella just happened. Let’s talk about it.
There was a clip that was kind of showing up everywhere. It’s him playing a song—a home recording from when he was very young—singing, and then him singing along with himself.
What I imagine happening—and, you know, I don’t know what really happened for Justin—is this idea of looking at himself, looking at young him, and kind of being delighted in the innocence and the youthfulness and the talent. Looking fondly upon a younger him.
But then there’s also this part of just seeing how young and innocent he is, and what his life’s going to become. And how there’s just no way that this young man has been prepared for the fame, for the demands on his time, for the access he’s going to have to all sorts of not-good things, including temptation, right? The publicness of it.
And I hope that it inspires and encourages many of us to make this similar journey of looking back at our younger selves, being moved to compassion, healing, and forgiveness there.
But even more importantly, to do this with Jesus—to allow Him to kind of visit with us, our younger self, and then allowing that same sort of loving gaze, the same heart, to be with us and to look upon us and to love us today.”
