Ave Maria is a new short comedy film (14 min) starring five nuns and a Jewish family in the West Bank desert – and it’s getting lots of buzz.
A Jewish family gets stranded when they accidentally crash their car into the wall of a remote Catholic convent in the West Bank, where 5 nuns are living a quiet life of prayer. “The Israelis can’t operate a phone to call for assistance due to the Sabbath laws,” the official website explains, “and the nuns have taken a vow of silence. Together they have to come up with an unorthodox plan to help them get home.”
And apparently it’s really funny! Though we haven’t seen it yet for ourselves.
The New York Times called it “a Middle Eastern answer to Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and the Huffington Post called it “charming, funny, beautifully made.”
It already premiered to great fanfare at the Cannes Film Festival, and it’s nominated for Best Live Action Short Film in this year’s Oscars.
