Have you ever struggled with endless scrolling, setting boundaries for screen time, or disciplining yourself when it comes to technology use?

Pope Leo XIV’s advice to the youth at the 2025 National Catholic Youth Conference may be just what you need to hear today.

The Supreme Pontiff and American native made history today alongside thousands of young people at the National Catholic Youth Conference.

During the 45-minute digital encounter with young people from across the United States, Pope Leo XIV answered questions on prayer, hardship, relationships, and technology.

One question in particular stood out as something we can all relate to.

Chris Pantelakis from the Archdiocese of Las Vegas, Nevada, implored the Holy Father’s wisdom on battling temptation regarding screen time and social media usage.

“I often find myself sitting on my phone, endlessly scrolling. I’ve also noticed that everybody around me is the same or has a very similar problem,” he begins.

“Many adults have told me that technology is great with moderation, so my question for you is: How do you suggest we balance all these great tools–social media, smart phones, tablets, and any other devices, while also making faith connections outside of technology?

Pope Leo XIV first acknowledges the benefits of technology. He even explains that it can help us live out our Christian faith or stay connected with geographically distant loved ones.

Of course, he also expresses his appreciation for how technology made their virtual meeting with NCYC attendees possible.

However, Pope Leo warns that “technology can never replace in-person relationships.”

Pope Leo XIV goes on to explain the irreplaceable elements of real-world connection, things that a screen cannot truly replicate, the Mass being one of them.

“There’s nothing that can replace true human presence,” Pope Leo says.

The Holy Father says that we must use technology wisely and be careful not to let it overshadow in-person relationships.

Then, Pope Leo takes a moment to mention the recently canonized Saint Carlo Acutis, a true saint of our digital age, and, as he put it, a great example in this common struggle.

“Carlo was skilled with computers, and he used that talent to help people grow in their faith. He also spent time in prayer, in Eucharistic Adoration, he taught others, and–very importantly–he served the poor,” Pope Leo XIV begins.

Then, the Holy Father reveals that Saint Carlo Acutis set time limits for himself when it came to screen time, allowing himself a certain amount of time each week for “leisure on his electronic devices.”

“Because of this discipline, he found a healthy balance and kept his priorities clear,” he continues.

Pope Leo XIV then encouraged the NCYC audience to follow the example of Saint Carlo Acutis, saying,

“Be intentional with your screen time. Make sure technology serves your life, not the other way around.”
