Who is Venerable Aloysius Schwartz?

Also known as “Father Al,” Aloysius Schwartz (1930–1992), was an American Catholic priest and missionary renowned for his work among the poorest of the poor in South Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico.
The Washington, D.C., native dedicated his priestly ministry to serving orphaned and abandoned children through his founding of the Sisters of Mary and the Brothers of Christ. These religious communities care for society’s most marginalized.
Through this religious order, Venerable Schwartz established Boystowns and Girlstowns, which shelter, educate, and provide hope to children in poverty.
After an ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) diagnosis, Venerable Schwartz continued his ministry from a wheelchair until he died in Manila. His legacy continues through the charitable programs he founded.
Pope Francis declared him Venerable in 2015, which advanced his canonization cause.
