St. Michael Statue Allegedly Oozes Blood, Began Prior to Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Colorado resident Alicia Martinez claims her 30-inch statue of St. Michael the Archangel began oozing a dark red substance just before Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of Kyiv, Ukraine.

In an interview with Catholic News Agency, Martinez said her roommate discovered the oozing statue. She said the substance oozes from St. Michael’s forehead.

““I asked [my roommate] what was happening, but he was standing there shaking,” she said.

“He’s not crying,” Martinez added. “He’s bleeding from the forehead. [The blood] passes around his eyes. It doesn’t enter his eyes.”

“It was dripping like when you cut yourself and the blood drips out; that’s how it was,” she said.

Martinez originally posted the video on Facebook, but removed it after significant backlash. Viewers accused her of using the video to obtain money and/or fame, however, she said these accusations are false.

“This is not fraud. This is not to become famous,” she told CNA. “I know it’s something divine from God that doesn’t happen to everyone.”

Martinez sought advice concerning the allegedly bleeding statue.

First, she discerned the situation.

“I said, ‘God, it’s either something good, or something bad. I don’t know what it is, but something is happening here,’” said. “It didn’t feel like it was something bad. It was an inexplicable sensation, but it was beautiful.”

The 57-year-old also turned to a Mexican priest. He told her the “marvelous” situation was “nothing bad,” that she should “pray more,” and that “her home is blessed.”

One religious sister told Martinez that “the blood would not stop flowing until it reached the head of the devil on which St. Michael the Archangel steps.”

The liquid stopped once it reached the devil’s head after flowing daily for a week.

The Archdiocese of Denver said the bleeding statue’s claims are under investigation.
