The papacy of the first American pope is just getting started! 🙏

In this episode of "The Catholic Talk Show," Ryan Scheel and Dr. Matthew Bunson explore the exciting and historic election of Pope Leo XIV.

Dr. Bunson brings firsthand insights from his experience covering the recent conclave, Cardinal Prevost’s election, and the amazing life journey of our extraordinary new pope!

Embracing a Universal Identity

Born and raised near Chicago, Pope Leo XIV’s unique journey to the papacy embodies a captivating blend of bold American spirit with humble, global experience. His missionary call to Peru and multicultural roots: French, Italian, Creole, and Afro-Caribbean, have greatly enriched his understanding of Catholic unity.

Dr. Bunson explains that in the conclave, "He really came across as more of a universal figure rather than an American; he was somebody who had served globally."

Championing Human Dignity

Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to Catholic social teaching echoes the visionary spirit of his namesake, Pope Leo XIII.

Dr. Bunson says that “at the heart of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of the human person, the dignity of work, but the dignity of the human person made in the image and likeness of God."

He is already signaling a new era of thoughtful engagement with today's challenges, like artificial intelligence, emphasizing humanity and dignity at every step.

Leading with Heart and Mind

On his papal coat of arms, Dr. Bunson shares that you can find “the traditional symbol of the Augustinians, a heart aflame pierced with an arrow, the theological virtue of love, resting upon a book. Augustinians stress both the heart and the mind."

By combining intellect and compassionate service, Pope Leo XIV’s Augustinian spirituality shows that the Church embraces love as much as wisdom.

The guys say that Pope Leo XIV will inspire and unite the Universal Church with joy, courage, and humility!
