The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus.

But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. -Isaiah 53:5

Before we share a special way to grow in devotion to the blood of Christ, here is what the Catechism says about the significance of the wounds of Christ:

“The Church is born primarily of Christ's total self-giving for our salvation, anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist and fulfilled on the cross. ‘The origin and growth of the Church are symbolized by the blood and water which flowed from the open side of the crucified Jesus.’ ‘For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.' As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross.” (CCC, 766)

There are numerous prayers for growing closer to Jesus by meditating on the blood He shed during His Passion and crucifixion. The devotion to the Holy Wounds of Jesus is one of them!

The Holy Wounds of Jesus Devotion

This devotion is based on the five piercing wounds Jesus experienced during His crucifixion: the nail wounds on His hands and feet along with the lance wound on His side.

People throughout history have meditated on the wounds of Jesus as a way to remember Jesus’s Passion and victory over evil.

According to the Holy Wounds website,

“It was through the revival of religious life and the zealous activity of Saint Bernard and Saint Francis in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, combined with the enthusiasm of the Crusaders returning from the Holy Land, which gave impetus for devotion to His Holy Wounds.”

The chaplet/rosary to the Holy Wounds and the promises associated with this devotion were revealed by Our Lord to Sister Mary Martha Chambon (1841-1907) of the Monastery of the Visitation of Chambery. At the time, she wrote about these encounters in her journal. After her death, Sister Mary Martha’s Mother Superior published notes on her life.

Below you will find instructions on how to Pray the Chaplet/Rosary of the Holy Wounds and the promises associated with this devotion.
