Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment announced that Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” will hit theaters from Sept. 10-17, 2026, in a newly remastered 4K re-release with Dolby Atmos sound. Tickets will go on sale July 24.

The three-time Academy-nominated film starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth was originally released in theaters on Ash Wednesday, February 25, 2004. It became a historic box office success

The film generated over $100 million in the first five days of its release, becoming the highest five-day opening ever at the time. It was also the largest five-day opening for any film released on a Wednesday and one of the largest R-rated opening weekends at the time.

The news of the re-release comes just after Mel Gibson completed filming the long-awaited sequel, “The Resurrection of the Christ.” The sequel will hit theaters in two parts, the first of which will release on May 6, 2027, also Ascension Thursday.

Behind-the-Scenes Sneak Peek of “The Resurrection of the Christ”

According to a press release, the theatrical re-release of “The Passion of the Christ” will include an “exclusive, behind-the-scenes sneak peek” of “The Resurrection of the Christ.”

“Audiences attending the re-release of ‘The Passion of the Christ’ will see an exclusive, behind-the-scenes sneak peek of the highly anticipated new film, which tells the story of Christ's victory over death after His greatest sacrifice—a moment that forever changed the course of humanity and continues one of history’s most consequential and enduring stories.”

According to Kevin Grayson, the President of Worldwide Distribution for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, the re-release of “The Passion of the Christ” will offer new generations the opportunity to experience the film.

“For millions of people, it was far more than a film—it became a powerful shared cultural and faith experience,” Grayson said. “Bringing it back to theatres in a stunning new restoration allows longtime audiences to experience it in an entirely new way while inviting a new generation to discover it in theatres for the very first time.”
“This also marks the beginning of the journey toward The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One, one of the most ambitious and anticipated faith films ever brought to the screen,” Grayson continued.
“With breathtaking scale, remarkable visual ambition, and a theatrical experience designed for the biggest screen possible, we’re thrilled for audiences to experience these monumental films as intended at the theatre.”
