Catholic actor and EWTN+ host David Henrie is always a busy guy—and this week was no exception.
Fresh off hosting the Sheen Awards, Henrie marked a special 10-year milestone celebrating the fateful day he proposed to his now-wife, Maria.
It was October 7, 2016—the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
“Ten years ago today. Little did she know, I had a whirlwind proposal surprise months in the making!” the actor shared on his Instagram account.
“She thought we were going on a helicopter ride with friends to see some sights. But as the date got closer, our friends kept ‘canceling.’ By the time the big day arrived, lo and behold, the last couple had canceled too. So it was just the two of us! What are the odds?! 😂”
Channeling the quick-thinking energy of his famous character Justin Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place, Henrie worked behind the scenes to engineer the ultimate romantic day—even contacting her school district to find “a substitute teacher so she could take the day off,” though he noted that detail was a story for another day.
“Anyway, we finally had a whole day together. We’d been dating long distance, with intentionality, for over a year and a half, and it had been difficult, to put it lightly. So I wanted this proposal to be so magnificent that the joy of it would overshadow all those difficulties.”
The couple spent the day touring Catalina Island before making their way to the historic St. Junípero Serra Chapel, where Henrie got down on one knee in front of the altar.
“She said YES! Then I ordered an Uber to take us to another location, where her family had flown in from the East Coast and was waiting to surprise her!”
And the ultimate providential detail? Given that it was the feast day of Our Lady, Henrie added:
“Wouldn’t you know it… our Uber driver just happened to have a rosary hanging from his rearview mirror.”
