What do we really know about Mary Magdalene?
In an episode of The Catholic Talk Show, hosts Ryan Scheel, Ryan Dellacrosse and Father Rich Pagano debunk myths about Saint Mary Magdalene and highlight her vital role in the ministry of Jesus Christ.
Historically, Mary Magdalene has been depicted as a prostitute. However, this mistaken identity has no Scriptural or traditional backing. "Mary Magdalene, she's a prostitute... that's a big historical slander. She was not a prostitute," Scheel says.
Instead, she was likely a wealthy widow and a significant patron of Jesus's ministry.
"Mary Magdalene was bankrolling; she was the patron of the Apostles," Scheel continues.
Mary Magdalene's role during Jesus's Crucifixion and Burial is a testament to her unwavering faith and devotion.
"One of the most important things she did was minister to Christ during His Passion," affirms Scheel.
Her connection with Jesus made her a fitting first witness of the Resurrection, Father Pagano says.
"Mary Magdalene as the first witness of the Resurrection...to be at the foot of the cross witnessing somebody whom she just so deeply loves."
Pope Saint John Paul II's recognition of Mary Magdalene as the "Apostle to the Apostles" highlights her indispensable contributions to the Early Church. Her inclusion in the Gospels is extraordinary, considering the societal context that often discounted women's testimonies.
"There is no way a Gospel writer who was trying to convince the world that this was true would have made up that it was a woman who saw Jesus resurrected," Scheel explains.
Refuting the controversial theory that Jesus was secretly married to Mary Magdalene, Scheel underscores the critical role of women in the Early Church: "There was a place for women, a prominent place.”
They also discuss the forensic recreation of Saint Mary Magdalene's face that "Jesus would have looked at so lovingly and so gratefully for her support and so tenderly as his Apostle," Scheel says.
