During the game between Boca Juniors and Benfica for the FIFA Club World Cup, referee César Ramos of Mexico starred in an unusual, faith-filled video that went viral on social media.
When Ramos sent off Boca soccer player Nicolás Figal with a red card, he accidentally pulled an Our Lady of Guadalupe holy card from his pocket.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico and is much loved by millions of believers worldwide.
Watch the video below:
“We hadn't seen the red one accompanied by a holy card until now,” an X post reads.
The clip lasted just a few seconds, but it was enough to go viral on social media and bring a smile to the faces of devotees:
“Blessed expulsion!”
“The Virgin is watching!”
“Nothing more Mexican than that!”
A touch of devotion amid tension
The referee is known for his faith and devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose image he carries with him on the field. For many, it was just a distraction.
But for others, a providential reminder: Mary is present even in the most unexpected battles.
Who is Our Lady of Guadalupe?
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego in 1531 in Mexico, and left her image miraculously imprinted on the indigenous man's cloak. Since then, she has been a symbol of love, motherhood, and protection, especially for the Latin people.
In a championship full of fierce competition, this moment reminds us that heaven always finds a way to manifest itself.
