The older and perhaps wiser I get, the more I loathe the public humiliation of others.
It is the new arena of the Roman Empire, where people who have erred or sinned are brought into the arena to be ridiculed and destroyed, like those deemed criminals being torn apart by wild beasts.
Like of old, oftentimes their spouses and children are taken in with them or are collateral damage.
For 28 years, I have spent thousands of hours in the confessional, in counseling, and in spiritual direction, trying to bind the wounds people have brought on themselves by sin.
I have tried to be an agent of mercy and an agent of the divine physician.
Jesus warns us that the measure we use on others will be the measure He uses on us.
I know, even though I am not an exceptional sinner, I am still a sinner who regularly requires forgiveness, mercy, and patience. I would not want to be publicly humiliated...why rejoice when it is done to someone else?
Just remember, the Romans deemed Christians as atheists and enemies of the state and sent them into the arena to make a spectacle of their suffering and deaths. Our Lord was stripped, beaten, crucified, and mocked the entire time.
Whose side are we on?
