It isn’t every day you walk into a college classroom to take notes from a scholar who has just been awarded the Ratzinger Prize—often described as the ‘Nobel Prize in Theology.’

For Notre Dame student Carmela Christi, she wasn’t going to let the moment quietly pass. When Carmela asked Dr. John Cavadini for a photo to celebrate his prestigious award, he gave the ultimate masterclass in humility.

“I want you to be honored with me,” the professor said to his class. “Somehow it attaches to you..”

The heartwarming video shows students proudly pointing to their world-renowned professor—a beautiful reminder of the bond between teacher and student formed in the friendship of Christ.

Bishops and fellow scholars are celebrating his decades of scholarship, teaching, and faithful service to the Church—especially his work on St. Augustine and the Fathers of the Church, as well as his leadership in strengthening Notre Dame’s Catholic identity.

Cavadini will receive the honor from Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Dec. 19.
