Did you know that one of the most beloved saints of the 19th century had a prophetic dream about a great battle against the Church—and the two “anchors” that would keep her safe?
Saint John Bosco, founder of the Salesians and tireless apostle of youth, was known not only for his dedication to young people but also for his extraordinary prophetic dreams. These were no ordinary visions.
Again and again, John Bosco described dreams filled with powerful symbols that revealed spiritual truths and offered guidance for the Church in times of trial.
Saint John Bosco's Dream of the Two Columns
Perhaps the most famous of John Bosco’s dreams took place in 1862. In it, he saw an immense sea filled with warships engaged in a fierce battle. At the center was a majestic vessel representing the Church, with the Holy Father at its helm. Violent waves tossed the ship about as enemy vessels surrounded it, launching attacks with cannons, books, and blasphemies.
Suddenly, two towering columns rose from the raging waters.
At the top of one column stood a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Help of Christians. Upon the other was a large Host, representing the Holy Eucharist. In the midst of the chaos, the Pope steered the ship of the Church between these two columns and anchored it securely to them. Once the ship was moored, the storm calmed, the enemy scattered, and peace was restored.

What John Bosco's Dream Means Today
John Bosco explained that this dream revealed a profound spiritual truth: when the Church remains firmly united to the Eucharist and devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, she will overcome any trial.
More than 150 years later, this vision feels just as relevant. In a world filled with confusion, division, and spiritual turmoil, the message remains clear. Our greatest strength and protection are found in Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist and in Mary, our loving Mother and powerful intercessor.
It is ultimately a vision of hope—one that reassures us that no matter how fierce the storms may be, the Church will never sink if she remains anchored in Christ and in His Mother.
As Saint John Bosco said:
Only two means are left to save her amidst so much confusion: devotion to Mary Most Holy, and frequent communion, making use of every means and doing our best to practice them and having them practiced everywhere and by everybody.”
